How Does Lake Norman Compare with Other Large NC Lakes
Lake Norman (at full pond) has 32,510 acres of surface
area, it can hold 3.4 trillion gallons or 1,093,600 acre-feet of water.
Next is Lake
Mattamuskeet, the only natural lake in the top 5 in NC. It has a
surface area of about 40,000 acres. This makes Mattamuskeet much larger
than Lake Norman in surface area. However it has an average depth of 2
feet. So, it has a capacity of 80,000 acre-feet of water and Lake Norman
has a capacity of 1,093.600 acre-feet of water. Lake Norman holds more
water but Lake Mattamuskeet covers more area.
There are 3 NC lakes built by the
U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers.
Falls Lake,
B.
Everett Jordan Lake and
John H. Kerr Lake.
There is no "Full Pond" level for these lakes, like there is for Lake
Norman. The primary purpose of these lakes is flood control. Because of
this, the water level can vary by more than 50 feet. In comparison, Lake
Norman rarely varies by more than 7 feet. John H. Kerr at 83,200 acres at
maximum flood-control pool is the largest of these three lakes. The bulk
of Kerr Lake is in Virginia with only a small portion in North Carolina.
B. Everett Jordan has 51,830 acres at spillway design flood level. The
smallest of the 3 is Falls Lake at 39,960 acres at spillway design flood
level. These 3 lakes have a maximum capacity that is much greater than
Lake Norman in acres covered and the capacity to hold water. However they
have never been at maximum capacity and often cover less area than Lake
Norman.
The conclusion is that of the 5 largest lakes in (or partly in) North
Carolina. Lake Norman is the overall largest and by far the Best Lake in
North Carolina!
Lake Norman History
The Great River was named after the people who lived by
it, the Catawba Indians, known in their own language as the Kawahcatawbas,
"the people of the river." As the settlers began moving into the
fertile lands along the Catawba, they brought with them diseases from
Europe that the Catawbas had no resistance to, and in less than 175 years,
their population dwindled from over 5,000 to less than 400.
These settlers built their cabins and farmed the land
beside the Catawba River, but before long they were drawn into battle
against the British Crown. In 1781, General Cornwallis proclaimed
Charlotte to be "a damned hornet's nest of rebellion." At the battle
site at Cowan's Ford, General William Lee Davidson, along with a band of
Catawba Valley farmers were able to slow the advance of General
Cornwallis. Early in the battle, General Davidson was shot and
killed at the river bank. A monument honoring Davidson is located
near the present site of Cowan's Ford Dam, but the exact location of his
demise is under the waters of Lake Norman.

project which includes office, retail, high-end residential and hotel and
